Creating a Sharp High Contrast Portrait

The High Pass Filter is a very useful plugin for sharpening images in Gimp. The filter comes with a several modes including a "greyscale" mode which produces a desaturated result.

In this video we take advantage of the filter to produce an intense sharpening effect contrasted against a soft glow / soft shadow effect produced using Gaussian blur.
